Two of the dopest minds in music (Phonte and Nicolay) come together to speak on a variety of topics - including the reasoning behind some of their creative decisions, how the connection between a North Carolina MC and a Dutch producer came to be, and the very touchy subject of blogs digging for Hip-Hop samples and posting them online… KevinNottingham.com is amazing for putting this three-part series out.

I remember the first time I saw “Thriller.”
To put it bluntly, I was scared shitless.
For the longest time, I couldn’t watch the whole video unless my older brother was in my room with me, or if my parents were around. And even then, I turned away from our ten-inch TV set when he transformed into that God-forsaken werewolf in the opening minute or two.
I was probably a toddler when I first saw it, but even today, as a 20-year-old college junior, the video and song still give me chills. Only now, it’s for different reasons.
I know now that Michael Jackson is the biggest pop star, entertainer, celebrity, or icon that we will ever see.
“Human Nature,” off of Michael Jackson’s Thriller (1982). This in an oft-sampled song in Hip-Hop music (“It Ain’t Hard To Tell” by Nas is an example), and a personal favorite of mine.
Public Enemy, also known as PE, is an influential hip hop group from Long Island, New York, known for its politically charged lyrics, criticism of the media, and active interest in the concerns of the African American community.
Brand new Camp Lo song called “Summer Love.” Found via okayplayer. You might recognize the Sylvia Striplin sample from the 1995 Junior M.A.F.I.A. single, Get Money.
The title “Full Compass” is derived from a song found on one of my favorite albums - George Benson’s Bad Benson. It’s a dope one to track down if you’re in any way, shape, or form a jazz aficionado.
